Well, why not though? Its just another search page they can display banner ads on and make more advertising income....

What other reason would they have for doing it? Sure, SOME chat occurs on IRC, but if they are indexing all channels, then mostly what they will be doing is creating a warez repository. I don't see why they would do it for fun either, so they have to have a reason to....

On this its not like you can't find warez in the regular Google search is it. So why would an extension to IRC matter?

Just a thought.

The spy bots are a little uneasy for the warez freaks because of the legal issuses behind the files these people are sharing. I however and more worried about the 100's and 1000's of bots that can join a channel in a matter of a few weeks from being added to packetnews ....anyone of these idling bots could be a spy php bot. most warez channels have 100's of them..thats what i would be keeping an eye on

I'm sure google wouldn't just bust into a channel without the owner's permission. You'd have to sign up with the service or something. Even then, it probably has the vhost irc . google . com or something for easy banning. I'd be rather interested in a google search of IRC. A lot easier than using grep on 10-30 logfiles Smile

What, so google have EVEN MORE information on you? Use GMail? Think stuffs deleted when you press "Delete Forever", nope..it's just hidden. Use Google Talk? Every conversation is logged. Google Desktop search? If you accidently hit the wrong tickbox copies of all your files are archived on google's servers. Google Search? Never-expiring cookie uniquely identifying your computer allowing searches to be traced to you (aswell as your IP of course). Google Maps? Yep, everywhere you look at is logged.

They can practically draw a complete picture of you with all that information combined. Now I'm not saying don't use Google, because their services are actually pretty good. But I'd hate to see them on IRC, so Google IRC Search? No thanks, I think we can all do without Google invading another part of the internet

While it is good netiquette to ask permission to log a channel prior to doing so, last I checked, there was nothing illegal about it. Users or bots can join channels and log or even publish what transpires in those channels without asking anyone's permission, nor are they required to notify the people in the channel that their conversations are being recorded.

Google makes a living understanding what people want, what people say, most common terms and words and so on. There are many possible angles for their interest. One being marketing, and others being from their problems with the gov to finding new marketing strategies. With irc being probably the most popular medium for the most talked about illegal activities on the net, perhaps they are for hire by people interested in whats going on in certain networks and channels.

As for having laws protect you and your privacy.. Laws change daily and loopholes are available to anyone who needs them. Don't count on a law or a right to protect you from wrongdoing. If you break the law, be prepared to accept the consiquences. I'm not sure if this still applies, but years ago you can have a disclaimer when people enter your home, and maybe even your chatroom concerning the visitors intentions. And that without following the set guidlines and rules of your chatroom or home, they are not permitted to enter, or record anything. I believe in many states a prostitute can protect themselves to some degree by asking if the john is affiliated with the law per/se.
