Sorry, but when you charge for software it stops becoming a hobby.

Yeah, and when people start noticing a lot of bugs (which btw mirc has had many) they will go after the programmer "I want my money worth it!" :p

Whilst your post was nodoubt lighthearted, I actually do believe that if I pay for something then it should work properly. That includes fixing of bugs. :)

People, in general, are idiots. :)

You do raise an interesting point however. You can bet your life if it was something like a home cinema system, other home appliance, car or so on, that if it didn't work correctly it would be returned promptly.

It really puzzles me, people dont put up with crap when it comes to physical possessions, yet when it comes down to software being buggy, its accepted as a norm. Granted, no single piece of software is bug-free, but the endless stream of hotfixes, service packs and security alerts pouring out of Microsoft's HQ is bewildering. mIRC (even though it is my preferred IRC client) does have the odd bug, hence why I upgrade every time I hear of a new version hitting the web. But I firmly believe that a piece of software that is more than 50% buggy should be freeware/shareware with no licensing fees (yes, I did pay for mIRC)

I also don't like free software that's buggy. I guess there's no pleasing some people, i.e. me. :)

You often seem to get a lot more. I think there's lots of good free software out there, superior to a lot of software you have to pay for, plus you get the support communities.

Linux to name one such *bonus* freeware-type program/suite out there (albeit, its a complete OS, but the point still stands)

now that pingy mentions Linux and since this thread is meant for mIRC, lets face it mIRC is not the best IRC client out there, and windows is an OS that degrades day by day with all the vulnerabilities and viris spyware and adware, a lot of ppl these days are switching to better OS's like Linux anyways read this article http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT8481640417.html

also a lot of ppl like a GUI IRC client and xchat is not the answer, I myself dislike xchat so here is a very good solution for a GUI IRC client, it is yet another ircII (one of the best text based IRC clients to this day for *nix) clone coded in java and perl and is fully GUI check it out here http://jirc.hick.org/jirc/index.prl

I see the future and it says Open Source all over it Razz

also that IRC client I mentioned for *nix is very easy to learn how to manage and even easier for scripting, to add more to my comment of *nix one of the biggest problems for ppl to switch is that ppl are too used to windows and then end up going to mac or something easy like that, wel that is not the solution, all you need to do to switch is get used to it and RTFM lol, there is also very good if not even better alternatives in open source software out there to replace all your daily used applications
