Ok this is a simple one.

the scrawl IP resolves to data.searchirc.com but because data.searchirc.com doesn't resolve to the IP it doesn't get used as the rDNS on many IRC networks.

20.145.64.72.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer data.searchirc.org.
Host data.searchirc.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

As a result only the IP is used instead.

This is due to the server upgrade. Everything was offline and not working. When your name servers stop caching the fail dns, you'll see this:

# nslookup
> server dns1.everythingirc.com
Default server: dns1.everythingirc.com
Address: 72.64.145.20#53
> data.searchirc.org
Server: dns1.everythingirc.com
Address: 72.64.145.20#53

Name: data.searchirc.org
Address: 72.64.145.20

Thanks. Only brought it up because a user dropped by my net and mentioned it happened on their own net.

no, it was useful. I had consolidated the name server records and only the .org had the record for the data.searchirc.org host.. so when both .com and .org used the .com setting, the data. domain no longer resolved.
